The Big Fix, a great new documentary about the situation in the Gulf of Mexico post the Deep Horizon oil spill, joins together all of the pieces of the puzzle and demonstrates how the utter collapse of our society’s stewardship of the environment is no longer a future probability but is a REALITY HERE AND NOW.
Oil continues to leak into the Gulf through the improperly capped drilling shaft. Thousands of gallons of an extremely toxic chemical called Corexit have been sprayed into the Gulf, polluting, for many generations, the Gulf itself and its many estuaries and tributaries within hundreds of miles of ground zero of the disaster. Wildlife, including all the seafood that comes from the Gulf (a multi-billion dollar business), has been devastated; and the food is not safe for consumption, despite the proclamations of the Louisiana Seafood Industry. Thousands of people are suffering severe health issues from burning throats and chests to oozing, open sores on their bodies and loss of motor skills. Local educational institutions and scientists have been co-opted, as millions of dollars from BP pour into marine research projects. This environmental travesty, it’s cover-up by organizations that exist to protect and defend the American people, and the complicity of the American public in allowing the news to slide from the front pages is a harbinger of things to come. The way the United States government has handled the Deep Horizon oil spill should be a wake-up call to all people who care about their local environment.
The answer is more action on your own property and at the properties you influence. Vote with your pocketbook and at the polls. Blog, but make sure you show up for meetings at City Hall, where your voice really counts. Check out The Big Fix at a theater near you.
