Construction began at the Manhattan Beach Strand Ocean Friendly Demonstration Garden with two parts of the project under way at the same time. Alison Terry, Licensed Landscape Architect, and G3 Certified Professional 2009 worked with the winning installation bidder, Stout Design:Build (G3 Certified Professional 2010), to lay out the small basins that will be placed on the hillside to SLOW, SPREAD and SINK rainwater. This garden is the third high-profile demonstration project of the ten total gardens designed by G3 for West Basin MWD and Surfrider Foundation.
The Manhattan Beach Strand OFG demonstrates the principles of Conservation, Permeability and Retention on a sandy hillside, making it a special project for the team. Many homeowners are faced with similar situations, and the common thought is that rainwater should not be allowed to soak on a hillside. This project will provide a clear example of using rainwater as resource to a CA native garden, welcoming the flow across the hillside to hydrate the Living Soil Sponge that will be built on site from the existing sand.
John Tikotsky, G3’s Irrigation Designer on this project, and Licensed Landscape Architect, approves the point of connection, pressure regulation, and flow meter installed to allow passersby to see how much water the garden is using (or not, as the case may be).
