Generation Water Youths Build A Sponge Garden

G3 Associate Jeff Adams Lays Out Sponge Garden

As part of G3’s week-long training for Generation Water (Water Efficiency Professional Training Program), the cohort works with G3 Associate, Jeff Adams to build a sponge garden at a residence in La Crescenta.

The cohort has performed a Site Evaluation of the site, and now Jeff is outlining the design of the earthworks that will hold most of the rainwater generated by the roof of the home. Part of the site had been sheet mulched earlier in the week.

Jeff next demonstrates laying out the swale that will greatly contribute to spreading out the water.  This part of the earthworks must be level to keep the water from flowing off either end.

The Swale Is Leveled To Spread IT!

After determining the depth and layout of both the swale, and each of the two basins that will gather the water before spreading it, everyone grabbed a shovel and began excavating according to the plan.
