Project Description

13220 Van Ness Avenue, Gardena, CA 90249

Along Van Ness Avenue, next to the very popular community center gym and skate park, 2,500 sq. ft. of weedy dirt was renovated to create this Ocean Friendly Garden. The project was funded through a CA Proposition 50 IRWMP Grant administered by West Basin MWD and Surfrider Foundation, and was completed in the Winter 2013.

This rectangular garden was unique because the downspouts from the 3,000 sq. ft. roof of the adjacent building were easily directed into the landscape.  The design included simple contours that created space for the rainwater to spread out over the garden area.  One significant challenge presented by the site was that it was very shady and that the adjacent evergreen Chinese elm trees (Ulmus parvifolia) had far-reaching root structures and dropped a lot of leaves and seeds (for viable seedlings) throughout the year.

The garden was planted with 100% CA native shade-tolerant flora, except for the addition of spring and fall bulbs to provide a surprising dash of color in the shoulder seasons.
