Project Description

1216 De La Vina Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101

Santa Barbara Lawn Bowls Club is a special place in downtown Santa Barbara, CA where you can try your hand at the sport of lawn bowling. At Spencer Adams Park adjacent to the Louise Lowry Davis Recreation Center, you will find two bowling greens where the sport of lawn bowls has been played by men and women of all ages since 1937.

From De La Vina Street, the clubhouse looks a lot like a typical one story residential building, so this Ocean Friendly Garden makeover project was proposed by Surfrider Foundation Santa Barbara Chapter, the City of Santa Barbara Dept. of Public Works: Water, Parks, and Creeks Divisions working together, and funded by a CA Coastal Commission “Whale Tail” Grant. The project was completed in the Fall of 2012.

At the entrance to the facility, 2,500 sq. ft. of existing mixed warm/cool season turf was removed and replaced with Ocean Friendly Garden.  The downpout from the 1,500 sq. ft. roof of the adjacent building was redirected (see the photos) from the back of the building into the front “yard” garden and placed into a low spot, dry “creek” area in order to spread out the water for the benefit of the CA native plants.

The labor for moving boulders, contouring the property, and redirecting the downspout was provided by the City of Santa Barbara Parks Dept. and the remainder of the planting, mulching, and installation of irrigation was completed through a series of community Hands on Workshops conducted by G3.
