Santa Barbara Ocean Friendly Gardens Site Evaluation Hands-on Workshop
The scene was an overcast Sunday morning, with forty people (homeowners, agency representatives, landscape professionals) participating in the second event in the California Coastal Commission’s Whale Tail Grant-funded Santa Barbara Ocean Friendly Gardens Program, co-sponsored by Surfrider Foundation, The City of Santa Barbara, Goleta Water District, The County of Santa Barbara, and CA Coastal Commission. This Hands-on Workshop on Site Evaluation was held at the Santa Barbara Lawn Bowls in Spencer Adams Park at 1216 De La Vina Street in Santa Barbara, CA.

G3’s Pamela Berstler lead the Workshop, assisted by Renee Roth, G3 Qualified Trainer, and an active participant in Surfrider Ventura Chapter’s OFG Program. Participants learned how to determine their soil type and check for compaction in the soil.
After gathering data about water requirements, water use, soil, plants, and runoff, the group sat on the lawn to discuss possible scenarios for remediating the site and converting it into an Ocean Friendly Garden.
Santa Barbara HOW Participants Brainstorm About Stormwater
Once a design is completed and accepted by the City of Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department, a Volunteer Workday will be scheduled to sheet mulch the site and create a sponge garden that people can walk through and explore.
